Fans raved about Mainoo’s duel with Fernandez
Fernandez was left on the floor as fans claimed Mainoo was a ‘£300m’ player
Mainoo was back in the Red Devils starting XI for their clash against Chelsea on Thursday.
And he was proving once again why so many have called for him to start in the Three Lions midfield at Euro 2024.
While facing off against Argentine World Cup star Fernandez early on, Mainoo got the better of his opponent – who signed for Chelsea in January 2023 for £106m.
Mainoo had played a one-two with frontman Rasmus Hojlund to skip around the press of the backtracking Moises Caicedo.
Fernandez, 23, then tried to win the ball off of the Carrington graduate.
However, Mainoo brushed off the challenge with Fernandez then falling to the floor.
Fans rushed to comment on the duel on social media, with one saying: “Kobbie Mainoo bodied Enzo Fernandez.”
A second said: “Did I just see Enzo getting bodied by Mainoo. Mainoo is CLEAR.”
A third added: “CLIP MAINOO SITTING ENZO DOWN RN.”
Another said: “Mainoo just sat Enzo down.”
A fifth said: “If Enzo was £100m, Mainoo is worth £300m. I’ve tried not to gas it but this kid might be generational.”
Conor Gallagher and Cole Palmer’s penalty kick after Antony’s foul on Marc Cucurella gave Chelsea an early 2-0 lead. The first half of the match was frantic.
However, Alejandro Garnacho seized on a misplaced pass from Moises Caicedo to allow the visitors an opportunity to retake possession of the ball, and Bruno Fernandes nodded in an equalizer shortly before halftime.
Subsequently, Alejandro Garnacho scored Manchester United’s third goal with a brilliant outside-of-the-boot pass from Antony, who was operating on the right wing, to beat a charging Djordje Petrović.
However, there was additional drama to come as Cole Palmer’s goals in injury time and during the penalty shootout helped Chelsea win 4-3.
