Mike Caliendo Returns: What This Means for the Chiefs’ Offensive Line

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially re-signed offensive lineman Mike Caliendo, securing his return for the upcoming 2025 NFL season. This move underscores the team’s commitment to maintaining depth and stability within their offensive line.

Caliendo, 27, began his journey with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent from Western Michigan University in 2022. Initially waived during the final roster cuts that year, he spent the entire season on the practice squad. In February 2023, he signed a reserve/future contract, marking his continued association with the team.

Throughout the 2024 season, Caliendo’s role expanded significantly. He appeared in all 17 regular-season games, starting three at guard. His performance during these starts showcased his versatility and readiness to step up when needed. Notably, he started the last three regular-season games and all three postseason games at left guard, filling in for Joe Thuney, who had shifted to left tackle.

As an exclusive rights free agent (ERFA) this offseason, the Chiefs retained Caliendo by tendering him a minimum salary offer. This strategic move ensures that he remains a part of the team’s roster without the risk of losing him to other franchises.

Caliendo’s journey reflects his resilience and dedication. After going undrafted in 2022, he signed with the Chiefs but was waived during the final roster cuts. Undeterred, he joined the practice squad, where he honed his skills and awaited an opportunity. His patience paid off when he was promoted to the active roster, contributing to the team’s success and earning two Super Bowl rings in the process.

The re-signing of Caliendo aligns with the Chiefs’ broader strategy to maintain a robust and experienced offensive line. By retaining players familiar with their system, the team aims to build upon its recent successes and ensure continuity in performance. Caliendo’s ability to step into starting roles during critical moments has undoubtedly influenced the decision to keep him on board.

Looking ahead, Caliendo is poised to compete for a more prominent role within the offensive line rotation. His experience and proven adaptability position him as a valuable asset as the Chiefs prepare for the challenges of the 2025 season. Fans and analysts alike will be watching to see how his contributions evolve in the team’s pursuit of continued excellence.
