Netflix has officially announced the upcoming release of The UnderDog, a powerful new documentary centered on the inspiring story of hockey legend Mike Gartner. Set to debut on June 15, The UnderDog takes fans on a deep, emotional journey through Gartner’s underappreciated career, his perseverance through adversity, and his eventual emergence as a beloved figure for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Sarah Fulton, The UnderDog promises an intimate and comprehensive look at Gartner’s life on and off the ice. The film features rare archival footage, exclusive interviews with former teammates, coaches, and family members, as well as candid moments with Gartner himself. The documentary aims to shed new light on how Gartner — often overshadowed despite his incredible consistency and speed — finally achieved the recognition he deserved during his later years with Toronto.

Mike Gartner, known for his blazing speed and one of the most accurate shots in NHL history, spent much of his career quietly racking up goals and milestones without the fanfare afforded to many of his peers. Despite scoring over 700 goals — a feat accomplished by only a select few — Gartner was often seen as the “quiet superstar.” It wasn’t until he became part of the Toronto Maple Leafs that his leadership, professionalism, and game-changing abilities fully resonated with a national audience.

Netflix officials stated that The UnderDog will explore not just Gartner’s playing days, but also his resilience through trades, injuries, and seasons where he was overlooked for major awards. Special attention will be given to his time in Toronto, where he redefined his legacy and became a symbol of perseverance and heart for a new generation of fans.

Early reviews from insiders who attended a private screening have been overwhelmingly positive, with many calling The UnderDog “one of the most authentic and emotional sports documentaries ever produced.” Fans can expect to hear from a host of notable figures in the hockey world, including former teammates, rivals, coaches, and analysts who watched Gartner’s career evolve in real time.

To celebrate the release, Netflix has also announced a red-carpet premiere event in Toronto, scheduled for June 12. Gartner himself is expected to attend, along with several special guests from the hockey community. The event will include a Q&A session and an exclusive advance screening for select fans and media members.

The UnderDog will be available to stream globally on Netflix starting June 15. Hockey enthusiasts, sports fans, and anyone who loves an underdog story won’t want to miss this heartfelt tribute to one of the game’s most enduring and underrated legends.
