Ex-Tottenham Youngster Shakil Nicolaou Signs First Professional Deal with Ipswich Town

Promising young winger Shakil Nicolaou has taken a significant step in his footballing career by signing his first professional contract with Ipswich Town. The 17-year-old, who previously spent time in Tottenham Hotspur’s academy system, officially put pen to paper with the Championship club after impressing during his time in the youth ranks.

Nicolaou joined Ipswich last summer following a successful trial period, during which he quickly caught the attention of the club’s academy staff. Since then, he has been a standout performer at youth level. Over the course of the 2024–25 season, he was a regular fixture for David Wright’s Under-18s, showing consistency and flair in his performances. His development saw him earn opportunities with the Under-21 squad, led by John McGreal, where he featured in several matches towards the end of the campaign.

A skilful and pacey winger, Nicolaou has also made his mark on the international stage. He earned a cap for England at Under-15 level, demonstrating his early promise at the national level. He also qualifies to represent Cyprus through his heritage, keeping his international options open as he continues to progress.

The club has expressed its commitment to nurturing young talent, with Ipswich Town chairman Mark Ashton recently highlighting the importance of strengthening the club’s academy recruitment. Speaking to the East Anglian Daily Times and the Ipswich Star, Ashton said:

“Moving forward, recruitment into the academy — nine to 21s, and the 23s — that’s got to get better and be more effective. We need to recruit in the underbelly — the players that aren’t quite ready for the first team now, but who are close to the first team.”

Nicolaou’s progression and subsequent professional deal is seen as a positive step in that direction. The club views him as a player with strong potential who could play a significant role in the future of Ipswich Town. His dedication, combined with the support of the coaching staff and his peers, has positioned him as one to watch over the coming seasons.

With the new contract secured, Nicolaou will look to continue his development and push for more opportunities at senior level, as he aims to break through into the first-team setup at Portman Road in the near future.
