As domestic football returned following the international break, Nuno Tavares’ run of providing an assist in three straight Serie A matches came to an end as Lazio lost 1-0 at Juventus.
Playing with 10 men for the majority of the game following Alessio Romagnoli’s 24th-minute red card, Nuno was replaced on 78 minutes with the score at 0-0. But a late Mario Gila own goal condemned Lazio to a third loss of the season.
In Portugal, Fabio Vieira helped Porto progress to the next round of the Taca de Portugal in a 3-0 victory over Sintrense.
The midfielder played 64 minutes in the 3-0 victory, pulling the strings to help the Portuguese side move one step closer to winning the competition for a fourth consecutive year.
Over in Spain, Karl Hein played his 10th match for Real Valladolid in a thrilling 3-2 victory over Alaves. The win was Valladolid’s second of the campaign with their last coming on the opening day of the La Liga season against Espanyol.
There was no such joy for Albert Sambi Lokonga as his Sevilla side went down 5-1 to Barcelona. The Belgian came on just before half-time, replacing the injured Chidera Ejuke. Robert Lewandowski and Pablo Torre both scored twice for the hosts in a big victory for the league leaders.
Back in the Premier League, Reiss Nelson was a second half substitute in Fulham’s 3-1 loss at home to Aston Villa. The winger replaced Adama Traore in the home defeat in which our former goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Andreas Pereira’s penalty.
Elsewhere in England, Charles Sagoe Jr came on as an 82nd-minute substitute but could not help Shrewsbury Town mount a comeback as the Shrews lost 2-0 to Exeter City in League One.
Marquinhos played the first 45 minutes as his side Fluminense picked up a vital 2-0 victory away to highfliers Flamengo, courtesy of two second half goals that took the club out of the relegation zone.
In Ireland, Jack Henry-Francis’ Sligo Rovers suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to Bohemians to put their slim chances of European qualification to bed. The midfielder played the full 90 minutes at The Showgrounds, his 11th appearance since moving on loan to the League of Ireland club.
In the Women’s Super League, Michelle Agyemang played the second half in Brighton & Hove Albion’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Saturday. Our former forward Nikita Parris netted for the Seagulls after Grace Clinton had given Man United the lead at the AMEX Stadium.
