Gabriel Magalhaes impresses for Brazil in 1-1 draw vs Venezuela

Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes delivered a good performance during Brazil’s 1-1 draw against Venezuela in a World Cup qualifier.

The Gunners star has become a regular starter for his country over recent months and he produced another fine showing at the Monumental Stadium.

The central defender had 76 touches in the game with a passing accuracy of 91 percent. He won three out of four aerial duels, blocking three shots on goal.

Despite this, Brazil once again dropped points away from home.

Raphinha opened the scoring with a stellar free-kick before the break, but Venezuela pulled level immediately after the restart through Telasco Segovia.

The 21-year-old unleashed a powerful strike from the edge of the box to beat goalkeeper Ederson.

Magalhaes made a good clearance in the lead-up, but Bruno Guimaraes and Gerson failed to track the run of Segovia, who scored his maiden international goal.

Vinicius Junior squandered a big chance to score Brazil’s winner from the penalty spot.

Despite the stalemate, Brazil remain in pole position to qualify for the World Cup automatically. They are third in the standings with 17 points after 11 games played.

However, they have looked far from their best in the qualifying campaign. The Selecao will be aiming to return to winning ways when they host Uruguay next week.

Magalhaes is expected to keep his starting spot alongside Marquinhos. Eder Militao’s regular injury troubles have made him a mainstay under manager Dorival Junior.

The £62 million-rated star is enjoying the best phase of his playing career.

He has an important role to play for Arsenal following the international break as they look to reduce the nine-point gap to leaders Liverpool in the Premier League.
