Match of the Day host Mark Chapman was among those leading the backlash after Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly was controversially sent off during the Gunners’ 1-0 victory against Wolves on Saturday. The decision, labelled by some as one of the “worst ever,” left fans and pundits alike baffled.
The incident occurred just outside Arsenal’s penalty area when Lewis-Skelly tripped Wolves’ Matt Doherty in what appeared to be a routine foul. Referee Michael Oliver, however, deemed the challenge worthy of a straight red card. Many initially speculated that the dismissal was for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity, despite the distance from goal.
A Premier League statement later clarified that the decision was based on “serious foul play,” a call that was upheld after a VAR review.
