Born in 1982 in Usurbil, Iraola played as a right back and progressed through the Bilbao youth ranks.

As a young player, he played alongside Mikel Arteta, Xabi Alonso, Mikel Alonso and Aritz Aduriz.

He made his debut for Athletic Bilbao in August 2003 and went on to make 508 appearances for the team, before joining New York City in the MLS in 2015, before he retired in November 2016.

Across his career, he made seven appearances for the Spanish national team and also represented the Basque Country.

Iraola moved into coaching, and his first job took him to AEK Larnaca in Cyprus in 2018.

He returned to Spain to lead Mirandes in July 2019, taking the team to the semifinals of the Copa del Rey for only the second time in their history.

After his contract there expired, he joined Rayo Vallecano, leading them to promotion to La Liga and again reaching the final four of the Copa del Rey.

He joined the Cherries after his contract in Madrid ran out, taking charge in Dorset at the start of the 2023/24 season.

Iraola has led Bournemouth to record points tallies in both of his seasons on the south coast so far.
