Arch Manning Shocks College Football World: No. 1 QB Prospect Decommits from Texas, Flips to Georgia Bulldogs

Sources confirmed to ESPN late Tuesday night that Manning, the heir to football royalty and the face of Texas’s highly anticipated future, has notified the Longhorns coaching staff of his decision. The announcement, which caught even the most plugged-in recruiting insiders off guard, has immediate and far-reaching implications for the college football world — particularly for the SEC, which now sees the powerhouse Georgia Bulldogs bolster their already loaded quarterback room with the most hyped high school signal-caller in recent memory.

The Legacy of a Name

Arch Manning, the nephew of NFL legends Peyton and Eli Manning and the grandson of Ole Miss great Archie Manning, has been under the national spotlight since he was in middle school. Playing at Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, Manning dazzled scouts with a combination of poise, intelligence, and arm talent rarely seen at the prep level. His recruiting saga has been closely followed since before he even took his first varsity snap.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound quarterback had long been considered a program-changing recruit. His commitment to Texas in June 2022 was heralded as a major win for head coach Steve Sarkisian, who saw Manning as the cornerstone of a new era in Austin. The Longhorns’ return to national prominence seemed to hinge on Manning’s eventual rise through the depth chart.

But now, just over a year after enrolling early and participating in spring practices, Manning has changed course — and turned the tide toward Athens.

Behind the Flip: What Went Wrong in Austin?

While the exact reasons for Manning’s decommitment remain closely guarded by those in his inner circle, multiple sources suggest a combination of factors influenced the decision.

First and foremost, Texas’s quarterback situation has grown increasingly murky. Incumbent starter Quinn Ewers, who had a strong 2024 season, announced his intention to return for the 2025 campaign, delaying Manning’s anticipated rise to QB1. Additionally, rumors swirled that rising freshman Trey Owens has impressed the staff enough to potentially leapfrog into the competition, further complicating Manning’s path to the field.

A source close to the Manning family described Arch as “fully committed to competition,” but noted that “he also wants a clear vision for his development and role. Georgia gave him that clarity, and they’ve been in quiet contact throughout the process.”

Another key issue: Georgia’s aggressive courtship. Though the Bulldogs were a finalist in Manning’s original recruitment, Kirby Smart and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo never entirely closed the door. After back-to-back national championships in 2021 and 2022, and consistent playoff appearances since, Georgia has cemented itself as the gold standard in college football. Their ability to develop quarterbacks — most recently Carson Beck into a potential first-round pick — seems to have swayed the Manning camp.

“Georgia’s offense is evolving, and they want to modernize further with a player like Arch,” said one SEC assistant coach. “You can’t overstate the appeal of stability, a championship-caliber roster, and NFL development.”
