Following a tough period for the Gunners where star winger Bukayo Saka missed time due to an injury, Arsenal could be set to add reinforcements on the wing.
They are reportedly interested in Bayern Munich and former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane as cover for their recent injury woes as they aim to overcome Sane’s old club in their pursuit of the Premier League title. Arsenal are said to have targeted Sane during the summer transfer window but were unable to land the player who has less than a year left on his contract at Bayern, meaning he could leave Germany as a free agent in the summer.
According to former Premier League scout Mick Brown, Sane is attracting interest from the Gunners alongside several Premier League teams as the German attacker looks to move away from Bayern Munich.
He told Football Insider: “He’s fantastically effective, he’s got explosive pace and he’s still only 28, it’s a good age. I’ve often wondered why Man City let him leave, and why no clubs in England had tried to sign him before he went to Bayern.
“Arsenal are very interested in him, from what I’ve been told. He can play on the left and provide cover for Saka which they desperately need. Not only would he add quality to their side, but he brings winning experience too which is always something clubs like Arsenal are looking to bring in.”
Arsenal face competition to sign Leroy Sane
The Gunners aren’t the only Premier League side to show an interest in Sane, as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United are thought to have also identified the 28-year-old as a transfer target either in January or as a free agent next summer.
According to reports, Newcastle United have made Sane a ‘top priority’ transfer target in January as they look to add more star power to bridge the gap and push for the top four. Due to his contract expiring, the winger will be available at a cut-price in January for an immediate transfer as Bayern aim to cash in.
The Germany international moved to Bayern Munich from Manchester City in July 2020 for £41m and has since made 182 appearances for the Bundesliga side scoring 50 goals and providing 50 assists for the club.
