BREAKING NEWS!!! Emotional!!! Netflix has announced the release date for a special documentary honoring the legendary Texas Tech Red Raiders football Head Coach Mike Leach . The film, which will celebrate Coach Bum’s remarkable life and Career

In a moment that has stirred the hearts of college football fans and storytelling enthusiasts alike, Netflix has officially announced the release date for an emotionally powerful documentary honoring one of the most iconic, enigmatic, and influential figures in the history of college football—Coach Mike Leach. The streaming giant has confirmed that the special tribute film will premiere on October 10, 2025, marking nearly three years since Coach Leach’s untimely passing and providing fans a moving opportunity to reflect on the genius, humor, and legacy of a man who forever altered the game of football.

Simply titled “Swing Your Sword: The Mike Leach Story”, the documentary promises an emotional and intimate journey through the life and career of the man affectionately known as “Coach Bum” by many in the football community. Leach, who passed away at the age of 61 in December 2022, was a larger-than-life figure known not just for his innovative “Air Raid” offense that revolutionized the college game, but for his deeply intellectual personality, his unpredictable interviews, and his unshakable authenticity.

Produced by Netflix in collaboration with Red Raider Films, former Texas Tech players, and Leach’s family, the documentary will chronicle Leach’s extraordinary path—from his unconventional rise to prominence, to his legendary days on the sideline, to his complex and unforgettable tenure at Texas Tech University. Interviews with former players, assistant coaches, family members, rival coaches, and sports media figures will provide a multi-dimensional look at a man who was as brilliant as he was misunderstood.

The film’s announcement comes at a time when nostalgia for college football’s most colorful characters is at an all-time high. Mike Leach was not your average football coach. He was a lawyer by education, a pirate enthusiast by passion, and a revolutionary play-caller by trade. His impact on the game was seismic. The “Air Raid” offense he helped pioneer during his early years alongside Hal Mumme fundamentally changed how college teams approach the passing game. It gave rise to a generation of high-octane offenses and propelled countless quarterbacks and wide receivers to stardom.

But for all his strategic brilliance, Leach was so much more than X’s and O’s. He was a storyteller, philosopher, and an unfiltered speaker whose post-game press conferences became viral sensations. From giving dating advice to explaining why pirates were superior to vikings, Mike Leach brought a sense of joy, wonder, and originality that the often robotic world of college football desperately needed. “Swing Your Sword” will not shy away from showcasing these unforgettable moments of unfiltered brilliance. In fact, according to Netflix executives, they form the emotional backbone of the story.

The documentary opens with an emotional montage of Lubbock, Texas, home of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, accompanied by audio clips of Leach’s most iconic quotes. Viewers are then taken back to the roots of Leach’s coaching career—his formative years in Cody, Wyoming; his time studying law at Pepperdine University; and the pivotal moment he left behind a legal career to pursue football full-time. From there, the documentary weaves through his early coaching stints at Cal Poly and Kentucky before arriving at Texas Tech, where he spent ten unforgettable years building a program from relative obscurity into a national powerhouse.
