Signing this week’ – West Brom near major €5.5m transfer deal as Albion respond to Birmingham City spree

The latest transfer news as West Brom close in on the signing of a forward.

West Bromwich Albion are reportedly expected to finalise the signing of SK Brann striker Aune Heggebo this week after a breakthrough in negotiations.

Heggebo is on track to follow Nat Phillips through the door as Ryan Mason’s second new addition as West Brom boss. The Norwegian will join up with fellow countryman Torbjorn Heggem at The Hawthorns in a move that bolsters Albion’s front line.

Our sister publication, the Express & Star, revealed over the weekend that a £4.7 million package had been agreed with Brann to secure Heggebo’s services. The 23-year-old, described by his homeland press as ‘The Hulk’ thanks to his speed and physicality, has already travelled to Austria to join up with West Brom’s pre-season training squad.

As a result of those arrangements, Heggebo missed Brann’s 1-1 Eliteserien draw away at HamKam on Saturday afternoon. The dropped points saw Brann lose further ground to Viking in the title race but the bigger loss will be Heggebo’s exit, albeit very lucrative for the club.

How will Heggebo fit in at West Brom?

Albion’s sporting director Andrew Nestor was determined to land a new striker and he’s now doing just that by welcoming Heggebo to the club. The 23-year-old will compete with Josh Maja and Daryl Dike for the number nine position, while Devante Cole is expected to perform more of a bit-part role as a backup.

Heggebo, a one-time Norway Under-21 international, has scored 51 goals and provided 14 assists in 146 appearances for Brann. The centre-forward first made his senior breakthrough in 2019, when he was just 17 years of age. Since then, Heggebo has played in both the first and second tiers of Norwegian football.

In terms of goals per 90 minutes, 2024 was Heggebo’s most productive year to date. The attacker netted 11 times in 1,279 minutes of Eliteserien action, equating to one goal every 116 minutes. His figures in 2025 haven’t been far behind that, though, with seven goals in 13 starts since the turn of the year.

West Brom eyeing more signings after Heggebo swoop

This could just be the start as Baggies could go on a transfer spree of their own after seeing local rivals Birmingham City tie up their second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth deals in rapid succession. Blues have stolen many of the Championship transfer headlines for their acquisitions of Kyogo Furuhashi, Demarai Gray, Tommy Doyle, James Beadle and Bright Osayi-Samuel, but Albion are making big moves of their own.

After Heggebo, the Baggies are expected to go after a winger to replace Grady Diangana. An addition wide man could also be targeted as Mikey Johnston is in talks over a shock move to Brazilian giants Flamengo. Midfield is an area Mason is keen to improve, too, especially after the departure of now-free agent John Swift.
