Colts Named “Logical Landing Spot” For Five-Time Pro Bowler

The Indianapolis Colts lost two offensive linemen this offseason, center Ryan Kelly and guard Will Fries, to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Colts needed to prioritize the offensive line since they’ve lost two of their leading linemen over recent seasons, aiding their quarterbacks and running backs.

Indy chose offensive tackle Jalen Travis during the 2025 NFL Draft to strengthen their diminished line.

Head coach Shane Steichen and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter can still bring in another offensive lineman prior to the season’s kickoff to bolster depth on the line.

Colts Identified as Destination for Free Agent Offensive Lineman

To address the depth requirements of the offensive line, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox identifies the Colts as the sensible destination for free agent Brandon Scherff.

Scherff is a starting-level guard who may have slowed down as a run blocker. “However, for teams that prioritize pass protection, he should continue to attract a significant level of interest,” wrote Knox. “Although Scherff will reach 34 in December, he’s a seasoned and reliable interior lineman who is likely to secure a position before Week 1.” The five-time Pro Bowler has not received an all-star selection since 2021, yet he has started all 17 games in every one of the last three seasons.

The Indianapolis Colts ought to be keen on Scherff. Indy is preparing to hold a QB camp competition featuring Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones, and it could benefit from additional assistance on the offensive line’s interior.

Scherff spent the most recent three seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars, not permitting any sacks last season. The former Iowa Hawkeye doesn’t commit many on-field mistakes, having been penalized just twice last season with the Jags.

Pro Football Focus assigned Scherff a pass block score of 74.5, placing him 19th among eligible guards.

As a quarterback competition heats up in Indianapolis, Richardson and Jones may benefit from solid pass protection and additional time to locate receivers downfield.

Brandon Scherff has spent nearly his entire career playing the right guard position.

Should the Indianapolis Colts sign Scherff, he would have to outperform the younger candidates, Matt Goncalves and Dalton Tucker, both of whom played snaps at guard for Indy last season.

Goncalves participated in 17 matches and Tucker took part in 14 matches for the Horseshow last season.

Scherff played in all 17 games for the Jaguars last season, while Goncalves and Tucker combined to start 15 games in Indianapolis.

The OL is nearing the end of his career, but Brandon Scherff can still offer reliable depth for the Colts throughout the season due to his durability.
