Arsenal legend Ian Wright has suggested that his former club should have made a move to hijack Tottenham Hotspur’s signing of England striker Dominic Solanke.
Solanke, who joined Spurs last week in a deal with Bournemouth worth up to £65 million, had attracted interest from several top clubs after enjoying a standout season, scoring 21 goals in 42 appearances for the Cherries.
The 26-year-old forward has signed a contract with Tottenham that runs until 2030, and he was officially presented to the club’s fans over the weekend. However, Wright believes Arsenal could have benefited from securing Solanke’s services instead
Arsenal, who finished as Premier League runners-up last season, have been linked with multiple strikers throughout the summer, especially after relying heavily on Kai Havertz in the forward position last season.
When asked about his thoughts on Arsenal’s preparations for the new Premier League campaign, which kicks off this weekend, Wright shared his optimism during an appearance on The Overlap: “I’m really happy with how pre-season has gone, and getting in [Riccardo] Calafiori is great.”
Wright hinted that Arsenal may still be active in the transfer market, saying, “I know there’s something else in the works for Arsenal, they’re going to try and do something, and they have to. They need to get 90-plus points. If something comes up, they will do it. They need the bench to be better.”
During the discussion, former Manchester United defender Gary Neville asked Wright if he was surprised that Arsenal did not attempt to sign Solanke. Wright responded, “You know, I wouldn’t have been too… that wouldn’t have bothered me if they went for Solanke.”
He continued by acknowledging the potential in Arsenal’s current attacking options, saying, “With [Gabriel] Jesus and [Gabriel] Martinelli, they lost their place last season, but we can probably get the goals from them if they get back to where we know they can be. They’re better than they showed last season.”
Wright also tipped Solanke to be one of the standout signings of the season, praising the move to Tottenham. “Dominic Solanke could be the signing of the season at £65 million,” Wright stated. “I like that move for them, and I think he could be a good signing with the way he plays. He doesn’t get injured, he scores goals.”
Solanke, who earned his only England cap in 2017, became Tottenham’s fourth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Yang Min-hyuk, Lucas Bergvall, and Archie Gray.
