New York Mets fans received unfortunate injury news as Jose Siri suffered a fractured left tibia after fouling a ball off his leg during the team’s 3-1 loss to the Athletics on Saturday.
Siri was placed on the 10-day injured list, though his recovery is expected to take significantly longer. The former Rays outfielder had a rough start to the season, going just 1-for-20 with four walks and a few stolen bases.
Tyrone Taylor stepped in for Siri, but he’s also struggling at the plate, posting a .158/.179/.211 slash line in 39 at-bats. With both Siri out and Taylor slumping, the Mets may have an issue in center field—though a bold solution might be available.

Luisangel Acuña, ranked as the Mets’ No. 7 prospect entering 2025, has primarily played in the middle infield, but also saw 253.2 innings in center field at Triple-A last season.
Acuña’s start to this year has been modest, hitting .258 with a .698 OPS over 31 at-bats, and he hasn’t gotten consistent playing time due to Francisco Lindor and Brett Baty (who is also struggling) locking down the infield.
With Siri sidelined and Taylor underperforming, the Mets might consider turning to Acuña—who happens to be the cousin of Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr.—to fill the gap in center field.
He’s proven capable defensively, registering a .975 fielding percentage with only two errors in his time in center last season. If the Mets are open to making adjustments, Acuña could be a solid option waiting for his opportunity.
