Manchester United would have sent Mason Greenwood a clear message if the loan forward tuned into last night’s 3-2 win against Newcastle United at Old Trafford. Erik ten Hag’s scintillating starlets showcased that the club has moved on from Greenwood’s emergence ahead of an expected summer sale.
The 22-year-old has impressed on loan at Getafe this season after 18 months away from football, registering 10 goals and six assists.
Greenwood burst onto the scene from United’s academy in 2019 and quickly established himself as one of the most exciting young forwards in Europe.
But in January 2022, he was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, all of which he denied.
The UK’s Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges in February last year due to “the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material” that meant there was “no longer a realistic prospect of conviction.”
Following a six-month internal investigation into a potential United return – conducted by the club’s former hierarchy – Greenwood left for Spain, reportedly due to backlash over initial plans for his reintegration.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has since inherited control of football operations after becoming co-owner earlier this year, forming a new-look sporting structure led by INEOS.
