Miami Heat Star Called ‘Overrated’ Before Possible Contract Renewal

Following a strong offseason, the Miami Heat appear to be led by two All-Star players this year. Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo have served as foundational pillars for the franchise over recent seasons. Although both have received All-Star selections, the latest All-Star is facing mixed criticism.

Bleacher Report classified Tyler Herro as the second most overrated athlete in the NBA. Herro qualifies for a contract extension in October before the season starts.

“The defensive shortcomings of Herro have been clear for a long time, but the expectation was that his offensive skills could compensate,” the article stated. “He’s simply not a top-tier first choice—at least not when facing playoff defenses—or designed to take on the foundational role Miami has imposed on him (possibly due to a lack of other options).” Scoring guards who are weak defenders and merely average as secondary playmakers have seen their value plummet in today’s NBA. Still, ESPN’s Bobby Marks forecasted that by October, Herro will sign a three-year, $149.7 million contract extension.

At the start of last season, Herro was regarded as one of the top breakout players in the league. He achieved his first All-Star selection by recording personal bests in several statistical areas. A past Sixth Man of the Year, Herro thrived in his role as a main scorer in the backcourt following Terry Rozier’s underwhelming performance. As the season concluded, his defensive shortcomings became clearer, and he is now seen as a player who may be overvalued for his contributions.
