Murray loses in what could be his final French Open match

Andy Murray may have played his last singles match at the French Open after the seasoned duo’s lopsided first-round matchup loss to Stan Wawrinka.

The 37-year-old Murray from Britain has stated that this tour year will probably be his last and has decided not to have surgery for an ankle problem in order to play at Roland Garros again.

However, he lost against the 39-year-old Swiss 6-4 6-4 6-2, clearly showing a lack of court time.

The former world number one has not played on the Paris clay since losing in the first round in 2020, and it had only been once since suffering a devastating loss to Wawrinka in the 2017 semifinals.

“The contest was always going to be really difficult. Stan has played outstanding tennis on that court over the years, according to Murray.

“I thought he would play really well. He probably did that. He didn’t give me many chances.

“I wish I could have done a little bit better.”

The British campaign got off to an unlucky start when Jack Draper lost to Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong, which led to Murray’s elimination on the first day of the Paris tournament.

22-year-old Draper, who is rated 35th in the world, lost to 176th-ranked De Jong 7-5 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 3-6 6-3.

Six British players, including Murray and Draper, began their careers on the Roland Garros dirt on Monday and Tuesday. The other four players were Katie Boulter, Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, and Harriet Dart.

Murray and Evans have qualified for the men’s doubles, so their French Open journey is far from done.
