In July, Russian retired tennis star Maria Sharapova was to list her Los Angeles home for $25 million, according to The Wall Street Journal. But in an off-market deal, it got a new owner: Slovenian NBA star Luka Dončić.
Located in Manhattan Beach, the property was purchased by Sharapova for $4.1 million in August 2012, according to Zillow. In 2015, the custom-built home was completed, and the Grand Slam star was very much part of its design.
“I was obsessed with the process of making this home,” Sharapova told Architectural Digest in 2019. “I’d jump off a plane from a tournament and go straight to the work site or to the architect’s office or to a kitchen manufacturer. This was my project, and I wasn’t going to delegate any part of it.”

Sharapova was inspired by Japanese architecture when designing the three-story home and really leaned into minimalist aesthetics. The five-bedroom, eight-bathroom property incorporates bleached oak, cedar, silver travertine, concrete and glass, which was spearheaded by architect Grant Kirkpatrick of KAA Design, along with partner Duan Tran. Interior designer Courtney Applebaum brought in mid-century classics and antiques from Asia, Africa and Europe to bring the home to life.
“I kept telling everyone that I want this to be the best house they’ve ever done. I tried to push their vision because I believe in all of them and want to see them shine,” Sharapova told Architectural Digest. “I’ve traveled all over the world and enjoyed lots of incredible spaces. But my home is my absolute favorite. I think that’s the way it should be.”

Sharapova will have to find a new favorite space, though. She and her fiancé, British businessman Alexander Gilkes, plan to spend more time in Europe with family, Susan Perryman, who held the Carolwood Estates listing, told the Journal. Plus, the couple and their 3-year-old son have a home in Florida.
It makes sense that Dončić is planting roots in California. In February, the 26-year-old player was traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in a shocking move, and he played some games with the Lakers at the end of the season. Last month, he signed a three-year, $165 million contract extension to stay with the team.
