spoke about his experience during his first weeks in the NFL, where he’s in the midst of an intense battle for the starting job with the Browns.
With just a few weeks before kicking off their NFL careers, all eyes are on the quarterback competition between rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders within the Cleveland Browns, though the battle isn’t limited to them-it also includes veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett.
The starting quarterback role remains a mystery, but for now, the former Oregon Ducks player has shared that he’s enjoying the process and the learning experience these weeks with the team have brought.
Dillon Gabriel “loves” the competition to be the Browns’ quarterback
When asked about his experience, Dillon Gabriel has shared only positive remarks, despite the negative narratives surrounding the Browns‘ quarterback room.
“I’m loving it,” Gabriel told Cleveland Browns Daily. “Been a lot of fun. A lot of learning. As you know, just with change, there’s things day to day that you just have to adjust to. There’s no way around it. Yeah, I am (used to change.) From this point on, I think you just know how to get into your routine a little quicker… just to your new normal. But I’d say I speeded up a lot better after being three different spots in college. So that’s helped me for sure.”
Gabriel has showcased his strong arm and accuracy during the rookie minicamp and OTAs, where he’s been learning from a new offensive coordinator, mastering new plays in the huddle, and adapting to a completely different play-calling language.
“Initially, you’re piecing it together and words don’t really mean much. But now, as we kind of dive into it, now it’s a lot easier, knowing what these words mean. I have (called plays a lot in the huddle) And in college, it honestly helped getting kind of the audio in that sense because a lot of it was visual. Now you have a voice in your head that’s got to paint a picture for you,” Gabriel continued.
While much is said about the quarterback competition, the truth is that Kevin Stefanski has a clear plan for his new players: give Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders as many reps as possible, as this will speed up their adaptation to the NFL competition and allow for constant evaluation.
Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 205 pounds, Dillon Gabriel excelled during his time with the Oregon Ducks, leading the team to a 13-1 record and a Big Ten Championship in 2024. He threw for 3,857 yards with 30 touchdowns and just six interceptions, completing 72.9 percent of his passes. Gabriel also contributed on the ground, adding 149 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 75 carries.
