The head of Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), Howard Webb has admitted that Michael Oliver was wrong to send off Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly during their Premier League victory over Wolves.
Lewis-Skelly received a straight red card in the 43rd minute for a late tackle on Matt Doherty while trying to break up a counter-attack just outside the Wolves penalty area. At the time of the incident.
VAR official Darren England upheld Oliver’s decision, ruling that the Arsenal youngster had committed serious foul play. However, the Gunners appealed the decision, and Lewis-Skelly’s subsequent three-match suspension was overturned.
Webb explained that VAR should have intervened, as Lewis-Skelly’s studs only made glancing contact, which fell short of the excessive force or brutality required for a red card.
