Rapoport: 49ers a potential landing spot for Joey Bosa

The Los Angeles Chargers announced Wednesday night that they had released Joey Bosa , sparking speculation about whether the veteran pass rusher might consider joining his younger brother, Nick Bosa, with the San Francisco 49ers.

NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport states that a Bosa brother reunion is a legitimate possibility.

The brothers last played together at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, when Joey was a senior and Nick a freshman. They continue to train together in the offseason and have openly discussed the possibility of reuniting on the field. With Joey hitting free agency, that opportunity may be better than ever.

When asked last June about possibly teaming up with Nick one day, Joey said, “It’d be cool at some point.”

According to OverTheCap.com, San Francisco has about $34.4 million in salary cap space. However, much of that is likely reserved for the future, with quarterback Brock Purdy expected to command a significant contract extension.

There will be competition for Joey’s services, but the 49ers could have an edge if the appeal of playing alongside Nick leads him to accept a team-friendly deal.

One concern for San Francisco is likely Joey’s durability. He has missed 23 games over the past three seasons, and his last double-digit sack campaign came in 2021. Still, the idea of both Bosa brothers anchoring the edges of the 49ers’ defensive line is undoubtedly intriguing.
