It is well-established at this point that Real Madrid intend to revamp their left-back department in the summer, with the signing of Alphonso Davies being targeted.
Furthermore, to make room for the Bayern Munich defender, Real Madrid are planning to part ways with Ferland Mendy in the upcoming transfer window.
Newcastle United interested
Now, Mundo Deportivo (h/t Fichajes), reports that Premier League club Newcastle United would be interested in securing the services of Ferland Mendy in the summer.
Mendy, 28, has put in a string of solid displays in recent weeks at left-back for Real Madrid. And even though Carlo Ancelotti and his staff are in favour of the Frenchman’s stay, the club do not see things the same way.
The French international has not always showcased his best version going forward on the left side while his fitness problems in the past are also a cause of concern.
Furthermore, Mendy’s contract with the Merengues expires at the end of the next season, in 2025, meaning he would enter the final year of his deal this summer.
As such, the Real Madrid management is in favour of selling the former Olympique Lyon defender.
Newcastle United, for one, are said to be interested, although the rumour does come off as a bit strange, considering the Magpies’ wealth of options at left-back.
Indeed, Eddie Howe’s side have Dan Burn, Matt Targett, Toni Livramento, and Lewis Hall as options for the left-back position. In fact, Hall’s loan deal from Chelsea is all set to become a permanent switch in the summer.
As such, the reports of interest in Mendy must be taken with a pinch of salt.
