The Texas Tech Red Raiders will enter the 2025 season with heightened expectations. After posting winning records in each of the last three seasons under head coach Joey McGuire, pressure will be on Texas Tech to take the next step and contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff this year.

Personnel Overview
There’s no doubt that this year’s roster is the best Joey McGuire has had at Texas Tech since he took over as head coach in 2022. They signed several key players through the transfer portal, including edge rusher David Bailey, defensive lineman Lee Hunter, tight end Terrance Carter Jr., running back Quinten Joyner, cornerback Brice Pollock, and offensive tackle Howard Sampson.
They will help supplement Texas Tech’s returning players, including quarterback Behren Morton, who posted impressive numbers for the Red Raiders in 2024. Morton dazzled last season as Texas Tech’s signal caller, completing 295 of 466 passes for 3,335 yards and 27 touchdowns with just eight interceptions.
Linebackers Ben Roberts and Jacob Rodriguez also return to bolster Texas Tech’s defense. They helped the Red Raiders post an 8-5 record in 2024, amassing a combined 210 tackles last season.
Schedule Overview
The Texas Tech Red Raiders will open their 2025 campaign with home games against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, and Oregon State. Then it’s straight to the Big 12 with away games against the Utah Utes and Houston Cougars.
Texas Tech follows that up with conference home games against Kansas, Oklahoma State, BYU, and UCF. The Red Raiders’ other Big 12 road games feature trips to Arizona State, Kansas State, and West Virginia.
The Red Raiders’ conference schedule features only three games against Big 12 teams that finished with a winning record last season.
Win-Loss Prediction
Joey McGuire hasn’t had a losing record at Texas Tech since he took over as their head coach, and that won’t change in the 2025 season. They will open their campaign with three convincing home victories, beating Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, and Oregon State at Jones AT&T Stadium.
The Red Raiders will earn a split in their two-game road trip to Utah and Houston to start the season 4-1. A victory against Kansas will push their record to 5-1 before reigning Big 12 champions Arizona State hands them a painful defeat on the road on Oct. 18.
Texas Tech will bounce back from the loss to Arizona State with a home win against Oklahoma State to improve its record to 6-2. Kansas State will be tough to overcome, though, when the Wildcats host Texas Tech on Nov. 1. The Red Raiders will conclude their regular season with victories against BYU, UCF, and West Virginia to finish their 2025 campaign with a 9-3 overall slate.
