Last offseason, the Green Bay Packers decided to make a change at running back. They surprisingly came out of nowhere to sign star running back Josh Jacob. Along with that came the parting of ways with longtime star Aaron Jones.
It was a sad day, to say the least. Jones had been a fan favorite of Packers fans for years. Seeing him leave, especially when he signed with the Minnesota Vikings, was tough to watch.
Heading into this offseason, could there be a chance of a possible reunion between Jones and Green Bay?
Garrett Podell of CBS Sports has named the Packers as one of the top potential fits for Jones in free agency.
Green Bay has a lot more cap space to spend than they have had in recent years. Splurging to bring back Jones is certainly within their budget and could help Jordan Love out a lot.
Jacobs was an absolute monster on the ground for the Packers during the 2024 season. However, having a two-back system with Jacob and Jones would be nearly impossible for opposing defenses to stop.
Jones would also add a different dynamic to the backfield for Green Bay. He has always been an elite dual-threat running back. Bringing him back would give Love a dynamic playmaker to utilize out of the backfield.
At the end of the day, this isn’t the most likely scenario for Jones. There are plenty of other teams who will offer him a lucrative deal and the opportunity to start. He could simply re-sign with the Vikings.
That being said, he still has love for the Packers and Green Bay could use him within their offense. It’s not likely, but at the very least it’s an intriguing thought.
