Wim Fissette never doubted Iga Swiatek when she explained to him how she failed a drug test. When during an interview, the Belgian coach was asked about what he thinks about Nick Kyrgios, Simona Help, Yevgeny Kafelnikov, and others’ stances on Swiatek’s scandal, he used some harsh words to describe them.
When Fissette heard about everything about the case before joining Swiatek’s team he believed that it wouldn’t cause much problem to her in the future. He thinks that though Swiatek failed the test, the case was different than the others, which is why when was asked about Kyrgios, Halep, and Kafelnikov’s comments, he urged them to read the full report.
Swiatek tested positive for trimetazidine because of consuming melatonin which she was taking due to sleep and jet lag issues. She was handed a one-month ban, which also included her three-week provisional suspension. During the suspension, she parted ways with her coach of three years Tomasz Wiktorowski, and hired Fissette.
Wim Fissette explained why Iga Swiatek’s case shouldn’t be compared with Simona Halep and Jannik Sinner
Wim Fissette, who coached Simona Halep in 2014, understands why she is frustrated with the verdicts given to Jannik Sinner and Iga Swiatek. He found Halep’s situation ‘really bad’ and ‘terrible’ but he urged all to evaluate every doping case separately.
Halep was a victim of contamination as ruxadustat was found in her sample. She was at first handed a four-year ban by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) but it was reduced to nine months after her appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
She returned to court in March this season. The same month Sinner tested positive for clostebol twice because his then physio was using a spray that contained the anabolic steroid.
